21st Century Nursing Educators

Hello fellow learners,
I have been in nursing profession for 35 years and have been exposed to the traditional teaching style. Teaching in the 21st century will be a great challenge. From traditional education going into online class, I was able to obtain my Bachelor's degree in Management and I am aiming for MSN/EDU. I need to huddle two more courses, and I feel excited to apply the learning and teaching strategy I have acquired to my future nursing students and fellow nurses. The current nursing shortage impacts the quality of care to patients, and the nursing profession needs educators who are creative, have innovative ideas, and have technological knowledge and skills. Educators need to inspiring and motivate nursing students in their learning experiences. Nursing schools are called on to expand their curriculum and continuing education programs to address these needs in the rapid changing environment of the health care industry.
In creating student - centered environment, I can incorporate different multimedia in motivating students interactively learn by posting a computer based simulation discussions that will enhance critical thinking in problem solving. Using case scenarios and case studies for team learning project will improve communication skills and will create a cohesive learning environment that will increase student’s social interactions. Educators need to be creative with their teaching strategies such as developing and creating a Wordle. This will grab the attention and interest of visionary students to become creative and explore different features of technology. The use of WIKIs, VOKIs, blogs, and participating in the second life learning experiences will enhance student’s skills in technology that will keep learning effective and productive.
The development of interactive user interfaces in health care, the changes in telecommunications technology, and the increased affordability of personal computers have contributed to the explosion of information technology application. As an educator, incorporating the knowledge I learned, the experiences I have in the clinical setting, the application of electronic medical record, electronic medication administration, and the use of different communications system will help prepare my students to face and apply their knowledge in the new paradigm in health care system.
